Medoc & Sauternes Grand Cru Klassifikationen
At the request of Emperor Napoleon III, the Médoc & Sauternes Grand Cru Classification was made by the Union of Brokers for the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1855 in order to communicate the idea of superior quality represented by the best production of Bordeaux. It was requested that the classification contained a list of all the red classed growths, specifying to which of the five Grand Cru classes they belonged and in which commune they were located.
The inclusion of a Chateau in the classification was based on a long-term track record of them establishing their superiority through a consistent level of exceptional quality production leaving no doubt of their capacity to produce great wine.
The broker´s list contained, and still contains, 60 crus from the Médoc and 1 cru from Pessac-Léognan (Chateau Haut-Brion) based on five categories, namely 5 Premiers Crus, 14 Deuxiémes Crus, 14 Troisiémes Crus, 10 Quatriémes Crus and 18 Cinquiémes Crus.
For sweet wines it includes 27 crus of the Sauternes and Barsac appellation, that being 1 Premier Cru Supérieur, 11 Premiers Crus and 15 Deuxiémes Crus.
Since the creation in 1855, the classification has experienced only one revision, namely in 1973 with the promotion of Chateau Mouton Rothschild from the rank of Deuxième Grands Cru Classé to that of Premier Grand Cru Classé.
Even though the broker´s judgments from 1855 remain strikingly precise, it is difficult to argue that their classification continues to represent the same accuracy of the relative quality of the wines as it did 167 years ago.
However, the classification still serves as a great promotional tool for the properties included and for the greater Bordeaux area. The list is a testament to the outstanding quality of the wines of Bordeaux, thus having a mythic status that speaks to the possibility of achieving perfection in an imperfect world.
