Haut-Médoc is a recognized wine region located on the left bank of the Gironde River, northwest of the city of Bordeaux. It includes several well-known communes, including Margaux, Pauillac, Saint-Julien and Saint-Estèphe. Haut-Médoc is primarily known for producing red wines based on a blend of Bordeaux grapes, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.
Haut-Médoc is home to several of the most prestigious châteaux and wineries in Bordeaux. Some of these are classified as Cru Bourgeois and others are classified as Grands Crus Classés in the famous Bordeaux classification of 1855. For example, Château Margaux in the commune of Margaux is one of the most famous châteaux in Haut-Médoc. Haut-Médoc is known for producing wines of high quality and prestige, and it is an important part of the Bordeaux area's wine production.
