Château Clerc Milon 5ème Cru Classé 2019 is a highly successful Pauillac with classic Left Bank character and a beautiful combination of power, elegance, and precision. The vintage appears rich and deeply concentrated, yet remarkably harmonious, which suits Clerc Milon perfectly. The wine possesses the aristocratic structure expected from Pauillac, but with an added charm and silky smoothness that makes it particularly appealing even now, although it also has excellent aging potential.

The bouquet opens with blackcurrants, dark cherries, and ripe cassis, layered with violet, liquorice root, cedar, tobacco, cloves, and a hint of toasted grain, mint, and dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and smooth with tightly woven, creamy tannins and a beautiful balance between dark fruit, freshness, and structure. The flavour develops with nuances of black berries, mocha, pepper, floral notes, and a discreet saline minerality, before culminating in a long, elegant, and persistent finish with both depth and refinement.

This is a wine that pairs excellently with beef, lamb, duck, game, grilled dishes, and braised classics, but it also works very well with mushrooms, rich pasta dishes, and firm cheeses. Château Clerc Milon 2019 is an obvious choice for dinners where a Pauillac with seriousness, charm, and classic cru classé stature is desired – a wine that impresses with its balance, texture, and its beautiful, prolonged finish.

The 2019 Clerc Milon is a real success. At more than 70%, this blend contains one of the highest proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon in the property's recent history, and the result is a wine of real nobility. Offering up aromas of violets, wild berries, licorice, loamy soil and cigar wrapper, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with notable depth at the core, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish. From clay-limestone soils rather than the sandy gravels that characterize d'Armailhac, this is by some margin the more structured and serious of Mouton-Rothschild's two Pauillac stablemates.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, broad and bright rim. On the nose, cassis, hints of sweet cherry and liquorice, subtle oak nuances, a touch of nougat and herbal savouriness. Full-bodied with good complexity, sweet berries, a pleasant freshness and ripe, supporting tannins, mineral and very elegant with a very long finish. Really showcases its terroir to the full and has good ageing potential.

Just so much joy to be had here. Precision architecture from the first moment, velvet texture, well balanced, tiptoes through the palate and builds slowly, delivering inky glass-staining colour. Sweet and seductive, with plump damson and black cherry fruits, and waves of aniseed and fennel on the finish. As with the 2009 this it will close up soon, as these tannins have bite, so expect it to keep building and deepening over the next decade. Jean Emmanuel Danjoy’s last full vintage, before he headed over to Mouton Rothschild in 2020. Harvest September 19 to October 9.
