Château Clerc Milon 5ème Cru Classé 2023 is a particularly elegant and well-proportioned Pauillac, where classic Left Bank character meets a fresher, more linear and precise vintage style. The wine is clearly dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, giving it uprightness, depth, and aristocratic structure, but 2023 also shows remarkable finesse and a juicy, vibrant fruit that makes the whole both charming and serious. It is a wine with excellent balance, where power never overshadows the details.

The aroma opens with blackcurrants, black cherries, and red currants, layered with cedar, graphite, tobacco, floral notes, mint, and fine spices. In the mouth, the wine is fresh, silky, and precisely composed with fine tannins, good vibrancy, and a beautiful, juicy fruit core. The taste moves between dark and red berries, slightly peppery spice, discreet toasted notes, and a hint of dark chocolate, before converging into a long, refined, and nuanced finish with both energy and classic Pauillac character.

This is a wine that pairs excellently with beef, lamb, duck, game, and grilled or braised dishes, but it will also be a strong match for mushrooms, rich sauces, and firm cheeses. Revealing aromas of red berries, cherries and blackcurrants mingled with hints of pencil shavings and new oak, the 2023 Clerc Milon is medium to full-bodied, deep and fleshy, with a layered core of fruit, sweet velvety tannins and a seamless, succulent profile. 94-96. Barrel Sample. A spicy aroma and a rich blackberry texture give the wine its ripeness and also its elegance. Dense with a sense of power as well as style, the wine shows a fine Cabernet Sauvignon dominated style for this estate.

Pauillac saw close-to-normal rainfall, with less mildew than other parts of the region, helping to usher in the excellent crop of wines found in the appellation in 2023. This joins the best of them with superb quality, and a real sense of excitement and drive. Expect brightness and tension in the blue and black fruits, with liquorice root, squid ink, salted cracker, white pepper spice and freshly cut herbs. Harvest ran from September 7 to 29, with 55% new oak barrels for ageing. Carmanère dating from 1947 is in this 1st wine, with massal selection descendants in Pastourelle. Caroline Artaud, director.

The 2023 Clerc Milon, which was bottled in June 2025, is based around the 72% Cabernet Sauvignon. This takes a few moments to really cohere on the nose, delivering quite intense black fruit laced with that leitmotif for the vintage, graphite and pencil shavings, rendering it more classical in style than recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with firm grip, a little more body than the d'Armailhac, very well balanced with real weight and depth on the sapid finish. Excellent.
