Château La Conseillante 2023 is an exceptionally refined and brilliant Pomerol, where the estate once again demonstrates its ability to unite sensuality, precision, and aristocratic elegance. The vintage appears more linear and vibrant than 2022, but with impressive intensity and an almost ethereal lightness, making its expression both modern and classic at the same time. It is a wine with great energy and exceptional finesse, where ripe fruit is lifted by freshness, floral nuances, and a very pure, terroir-driven signature.

The aroma opens with violet, lily, and dark flowers, followed by blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry, and raspberry, finely nuanced by licorice, sandalwood, spices, truffle, dark chocolate, and a discreet hint of orange peel. On the palate, the wine is silky smooth and lively with ultrafine tannins, cool, precise fruit, and fresh acidity, which gives the taste both direction and vibrancy. The flavor moves elegantly between dark and red berries, fine spices, and a subtle mineral nerve, before converging in a long, seamless, and exceptionally refined aftertaste with great balance, energy, and persistent depth.

This is a wine that pairs excellently with veal, beef, lamb, duck, pigeon, and game, but also with dishes featuring mushrooms, truffles, and elegant sauces, where its finesse truly has room to unfold. Château La Conseillante 2023 is an obvious choice for grand dinners and special occasions where one desires a Pomerol with both charm, silky smooth texture, and serious aging potential – a wine that impresses with its composure, its level of detail, and its almost weightless grandeur.

Just as it was from cask, the 2023 La Conseillante is one of the vintage's most exciting wines in bottle. Offering up lavish aromas of ripe blackberries and mulberries mingled with hints of violets and mint, it's medium- to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with an ample core of fruit, beautifully refined tannins and a long, perfumed finish. Readers who own both the deeper-pitched, elegantly muscular 2022 and the utterly charming, hedonistic 2023 will enjoy comparing and contrasting the two over the decades to come. The 2023 is a blend of 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc, some 30% of which is maturing in amphorae. Harvest began on September 7, lasting until October 2, block by block.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 La Conseillante pounces from the glass with playful scents of Morello cherries, wild blueberries, and juicy plums leading to fragrant suggestions of violets, dark chocolate, rosebud tea, and star anise. The medium-bodied palate is wonderfully elegant and graceful, with super-sleek kitten-soft tannins and spectacular tension that delivers an electric feel, although the finish purrs. 85% of this year's crop went in to the First Wine, a blend of 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc with pH 3.68. A punch of floral aromatics sets the scene for this gorgeous wine, and this is a brilliant La Conseillante with textured powerful depths to the blueberry and blackberry fruit, laced with cocoa bean and espresso, and a frame of juicy tannins on the giving structure and lift. Easily among the most successful wines of Pomerol in the vintage. Started picking September 7 and finished October 2. 3.6ph. 3% of amphora, 43hl/h yield. 70% aged in new oak. Drink 2030 - 2046

The 2023 La Conseillante was picked from September 7, with the final Cabernet Franc brought in on October 2 at 43hL/ha. There were just six days of picking over 3.5 weeks. Matured in 70% new oak, it has a very well-defined bouquet with black cherries, wild strawberries, touches of violet and a hint of crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with a captivating, edgy opening. Just slightly granular in texture thanks to the tannin structure, it’s very harmonious and poised, with a sophisticated, mineral-driven finish. This is an exceptional La Conseillante from Marielle Cazaux and her team. It will rank alongside the 2022 even if it is very different stylistically. (NM)

About the grape

Serving
