A rich and demonstrative vintage for this estate, the 2015 Latour unfurls in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cassis, loamy soil, espresso roast, pencil shavings and a subtle hint of potpourri. Medium to full-bodied, supple and elegant, with a velvety attack that segues into a sweet, layered mid-palate, it's enveloping and complete, concluding with a sapid finish. The tauter, more classical 2014 is likely to prove longer lived, whereas the giving 2015 is a Latour that it wouldn't be a crime to drink young.

Deep dark ruby colour, opaque core with subtle rim. On the nose you detect blackberry, liquorice, black cherry, a touch of ripe plum, savory oak and a hint of violet. Intense blackberry fruit on the palate, full of energy, taut and with perfect tannins. It seems monolithic and cool at first, but has balanced sweetness, great charm and very long on the palate. A perfect Cabernet wine that seems built for eternity.

98–100. Barrel Sample. Reaching for 100 points, this Latour has great structure and power. Almost pure Cabernet Sauvignon this year, it is a grandiose wine, packed with tannins, rich black fruits and a solid core that will allow it to age over so many years. The acidity and crisp black-currant flavor at the end means the fruit can only shine even more as it develops. Superb.

Tobacco, liquorice and graphite all spread on toasted sandalwood, cedar, gunsmoke, cassis, black truffle, bilberry, crushed rocks and incense. The tannins here are very much slate and pumice stone, you feel the salt scrape, the length and persistence, and the oh-so-slow unrolling of pleasure. This has graceful depths and floral aromatics alongside Pauillac muscles and is a stellar Latour that needs another three or four years of cellaring to really soften. Overall yield of just under 45hl/h, unusual as the average yield at Latour is closer to 35hl/h. 100% new oak for ageing, 36% of overall production.

Cabernet Sauvignon - Merlot
