The 2012 Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne is showing beautifully out of the gates, offering up demonstrative aromas of sweet golden orchard fruit, buttery croissants, peach and hazelnuts. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and enveloping, it's a rich, textural, vinous Comtes somewhat reminiscent of the brilliant 2002. If it gains in tension and cut (as the 2002 did and as I suspect the 2012 will) with more time on cork , it will make this initial rating seem conservative.

Bright straw colour, silver reflections, very fine and persistent mousse. Nuances of yellow tropical fruit such as mango, notes of peach, white flowers, lime zest, almonds, multi-faceted bouquet with a hint of fresh cookie. Complex on the palate, finely-meshed, silky texture, conveys fruity richness without any opulence, full of finesse, very animating and balanced, white pome fruit in the finish, mineral-salty touch in the echo, great harmony and length, a great future for this wine. The problem is that the 2012 is already so perfect that it is hard to keep one's hands off it; it certainly has exciting aging potential.

Always one of the great Champagnes, this comes from a year that is generally regarded as good but not great. And yet, with this Champagne is magnificent. The wine has some good bottle age, hinting at toast while also keeping the tight, mineral edge of a great wine from the Côte des Blancs. Drink from 2020. Roger Voss

The date of the 2007 harvest (late August) might give a false impression of ripeness. The harvest date was influenced by early flowering rather than excess heat during the growing season. Chardonnay was by far the most successful variety during this vintage, which is reflected in the quality of this release. Newly released, it was nervy, with a streak of chalky minerality dominating lemony fruit. There has been some evolution in the intervening years, and this champagne is now replete with lovely nutty-toasty yellow fruit. The quick burst of aromatic development suggests this may not be the longest-lived champagne, although it should remain vital over the next decade. Alcohol 12.50%. Tasted Jun 2023.

About the grape

Chardonnay

Serving

Chardonnays alsidighed betyder, at serveringstemperaturen varierer efter stil.

Temperatur: Mellem 8-12°C

- Lette, uoaked Chardonnay (Chablis, mineralske vine): 8-10°C – kold nok til at fremhæve friskhed og syre
- Fyldige, oaked Chardonnay (Bourgogne, New World): 10-12°C – lidt varmere for at frigive cremede, smørrede aromaer

Tag vinen ud af køleskabet 10-15 minutter før servering, hvis den er for kold. For kolde vine dæmper aromaerne.

Dekantning: Sjældent nødvendig

Hvidvin dekanteres sjældent, men ældre Bourgogne med kompleksitet kan have gavn af lidt luft. Hæld vinen i en karaffel 15-20 minutter før servering for at åbne aromaerne.
