Château Angélus – Saint-Émilion 2022 (75 cl) is one of the most iconic wines from the Right Bank of Bordeaux – Château Angélus – and a strong expression of the exceptional 2022 vintage. Here, power, precision, and elegance meet in a wine with both intensity and balance.

The wine opens with deep aromas of sun-ripened dark berries, plums, and cherries, followed by floral notes, licorice, and fine spices. On the palate, it is concentrated and velvety, with dense fruit, silky tannins, and an impressive length. The freshness lifts the whole and provides a beautiful balance to its rich style.

A wine with great aging potential that will develop even greater complexity over the next 10–20+ years. Can be enjoyed young with decanting, but rewards patience.

A modern classic from Saint-Émilion – powerful, elegant, and age-worthy with exceptional balance and depth.

The 2022 Angélus has turned out beautifully in bottle, reflecting the estate's shift toward a livelier, more integrated style. Wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet cherries, blackberries and mulberries mingled with rose petals and violets, it's full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, with a deep, enveloping core of succulent fruit, integrated tannins and a long, perfumed finish. It was bottled in the last week of July 2024.

The added density of the vintage is clear, and this is extremely impressive, great lift through the palate, switchback of opulent texture, rich damson, cocoa bean, black tea, sandalwood and incense, flavourful and delivered with grip and tension. Super impressive, 100% new oak for the barrels, with 20% of the production (Cabernet Franc only) aged in large oak casks. September 8 to 29 for the harvest. First year out of the St Emilion ranking, still delivering at the top of the appellation.

96-98 Barrel sample. This is a beautifully floral wine featuring ripe black fruits and delicious acidity. It is structured with polished tannins that are deceptively soft, but still offer texture and the ripest blackberry flavors. It is a great wine for long-term aging.

This is a powerful Angelus, showing incredible depth and intensity as well as tannins that are totally melted into the wine, giving incredible energy for such a young bottle. It makes me think of the great reds of the 1940s or 1950s but with modern precision. Full-bodied but agile, this has endless length, the blackberries and crushed stones, light herbs and dark chocolate showing throughout. Such balance. Al dente. 60% merlot and 40% cabernet franc. So attractive now but will age forever.

Dark ruby in colour with an opaque core, purple reflections, and subtle brightening on the rim. On the nose, an inviting bouquet of subtle sweet tobacco, a hint of herbs, fine red berry nuances, subtle nougat, and orange zest in the background. The elegant, silky palate is juicy with ripe cherry fruit, delicately spicy nuances with fine fruit, great freshness, and barely noticeable, finely polished tannins. Already very accessible, this is a delicate food wine equipped with considerable length and great ageing potential.

About the grape

Serving
