Château Canon 2017 is a prestigious red wine from Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux, France, from a château classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé B. The 2017 vintage is composed of 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc, has 14% alcohol, and the château's own vintage sheet highlights a style with crisp fruit, aromatic herbal notes, and great freshness.

In the glass, the wine appears intense and refined with aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, cherry, garrigue, flowers, eucalyptus, and spicy nuances. The taste is silky smooth and precise with a full-bodied but fine-grained structure, where the chalky minerality and ripe tannins provide a long and elegant finish.

Château Canon 2017 is aged for 18 months, and the château's official technical information indicates 56% new barrels for Château Canon. This supports the wine's balance between fruit, structure, and discreet oak influence, making it a classic and age-worthy Bordeaux with both immediate charm and great development potential.

This exclusive Saint-Émilion red wine pairs particularly well with beef, lamb, game, duck, braised dishes, and mature cheeses. Berry Bros. & Rudd indicate a drinking window from 2023 to 2044, which underscores the wine's excellent potential both now and in the cellar.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Canon bursts from the glass with expressive notions of baked black cherries, kirsch, plum preserves and black raspberries plus hints of red roses, Ceylon tea, black olives and fertile loam. Medium-bodied, the palate is wonderfully elegant and refined, with a soft, finely grained texture and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. The blend is 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc and it was aged for 18 months in French oak, 50% new. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate

Cabernet Franc dominant, with raspberry leaf, blueberries, wild strawberry, rosemary and sage, with a touch of rhubarb and salted caramel at the close of play. This has a real sense of energy, it is light of touch, deft and enjoyable. No need to wait to drink this, although no hurry either. 56% new oak. No frost here on the St Emilion plateau compared to many in the appellation, so fewer issues with ripening, although there was still rain in September, giving a lighter framed vintage compared to the ones on either side. 42hl/h yield, 56% new oak, harvest September 4 to 27. 3.66ph.

Dark and dense, this is a massive wine. Big tannins are paralleled by concentrated blackberry fruits to give a wine that is both juicy and impressively rich. Structure and power are likely to be tamed as the wine ages. Drink from 2024. Roger Voss

Deep dark ruby garnet, purple reflections, delicate rim brightening, ripe black cherry fruit, a hint of plums and nougat, candied orange zest. Juicy, elegant, fresh cherries, fine, integrated tannins, medium length, freshly structured, mineral finish, accessible style, remains somewhat short.

About the grape

Serving
