Château Pichon Baron 2ème Cru Classé 2018 is an exclusive red wine from Pauillac, Bordeaux, that combines power, precision, and aristocratic elegance in a style that has made the château one of the appellation's most sought-after producers. The 2018 vintage shows impressive depth, concentration, and structure, but also the finesse and balance characteristic of a great, long-lived Pauillac.

The aroma is precise and nuanced with notes of blackcurrant, dark berries, and dark cherries, accompanied by cedar, tobacco, spices, discreet herbal nuances, and a lightly smoked touch. The aromatic profile is both classic and intense with a dark fruit core, giving the wine an exclusive and complex expression in the glass.

The taste is full-bodied, concentrated, and silky smooth with a generous opening, ripe dark fruit, and powerful, finely integrated tannins. The structure is firm and precise, yet elegant, and the lively freshness keeps the dense fruit in beautiful balance. The finish is long, harmonious, and persistent with dark berries, spice, and a characteristic Pauillac note that emphasizes the wine's depth and aging potential.

The wine is made from a classic Bordeaux blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, providing both backbone, complexity, and a noble expression. Château Pichon Baron 2018 is an excellent match for beef, veal, lamb, duck, game, as well as braised, grilled, and oven-roasted dishes, where the wine's structure and intensity can fully unfold. An obvious wine for exclusive dinners and special occasions when only a grand and characterful Pauillac is the right choice.

The 2018 Pichon-Longueville Baron is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot, aged for 18 months in barriques, 80% new and 20% one year old. Production of the grand vin represents 50% of the harvest this year. Deep garnet-purple colored, the nose bursts from the glass with flamboyant scents of stewed black plums, crème de cassis and Black Forest cake, plus suggestions of Indian spices, unsmoked cigars, pencil shavings and espresso. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers impactful black fruit preserves and exotic spice layers, framed by plush tannins and a lively backbone, finishing long and spicy. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate

An exceptionally successful vintage at Pichon Baron, juicy, concentrated and finessed, with powerful yet well balanced bilberry and blackberry fruits. The sense of complexity and nuance builds from beginning to end, coming in waves of baked earth, crayon and liquorice bud, with a slate texture to the tannins that slows the progress down through the palate and promises great things ahead. 80% new oak. They had to fight against mildew as everyone did, but came out a little better than some, at around 32hl/h yield. Jean-René Matignon technical director.

This great estate in southern Pauillac, facing the Latour vineyard, is at the top of its game. In this release, the tannins are as impressive and dense as the black fruits. Together they form a harmonious ensemble, richly structured, concentrated from the many old vines in the blend, and very ageworthy. Drink from 2027. Roger Voss

Very dark ruby, opaque core, violet hues, delicately paler at the rim. Dark berry fruit underlaid with pleasant spiced wood, lush sweetheart cherries and a touch of toasted caramel in the background. Complex, sweetheart cherries, delicate blackcurrant nuances, fine supporting tannins, good freshness and length. Possesses safe ageing potential. (2025-2045).

About the grape

Serving
