Bollinger R.D. 2004 Extra Brut is a prestigious vintage champagne from Champagne in France, crafted in the house's distinctive style with power, precision, and great aging potential. R.D. stands for "Recently Disgorged", meaning the champagne has aged extra long on its lees and was disgorged late to preserve both mature complexity and significant freshness. Bollinger's official presentation of the 2004 precisely highlights this tension between aromatic intensity and a fresh, dry finish.

The 2004 vintage is composed of 66% Pinot Noir and 34% Chardonnay. Several sources also indicate that the wine comes predominantly from Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards, and that it is vinified exclusively in old oak barrels. Additionally, a very long lees aging of about 13 years and a low dosage of 3 g/l are mentioned, which emphasizes the wine's dry and focused Extra Brut style.

In the glass, Bollinger R.D. 2004 presents an intense and refined profile. Tasting notes from retailers and importer materials point to nuances of ripe fruit, toasted bread, honey, spices, dried fruits, citrus, and mineral tones, while the champagne is simultaneously described as powerful, fresh, and persistent in the finish.

This exclusive prestige champagne in magnum format is particularly well-suited for lobster, caviar, shellfish, fine fish dishes, and elegant appetizers, but also works beautifully as a luxurious aperitif for special occasions. The product is delivered in a 150 cl magnum, making it ideal for larger dinners, celebrations, and longer aging.

Fermented in oak barrels and aged under natural corks for almost 13 years, Bollinger's 2004 R. D. Extra Brut blends 66% Pinot Noir with 34% Chardonnay from 16 crus, 88% of which are classified as Grand Cru. The wine opens with a very clear, deep, rich and aromatic but also pure and mineral-fresh nose of crushed rocks, cherries, brioche, pain aux raisin, white nougat, chalk and ripe, yellow-fleshed fruits. Highly elegant and complex on the weightless yet persistent and salty palate, this is an intense, densely woven, firmly structured yet elegant, beautifully refined and refreshing "recent disgorgement" (February 2018) that reveals just a kiss of oxidative flavors that adds even more complexity. A great Champagne on its way to improve over many years in the bottle. Tasted June 2018. I have tasted an excellent, beautifully fresh, precise and and persistent range of Bollinger Champagne. The Brut Rosé is just fabulous and helps to bridge the time we have to wait for the promising and highly refined 2007 Grande Année Rosé that still needs some years in the bottle to play out its class and complexity. 2007 saw a very early harvest, and the exceptional wines are characterized by freshness and finesse. For the moment, I prefer the very fine, elegant and chalky style of the Grande Année Rosé to the more rich and full-bodied Blanc. I'm also excited to follow the evolution of the 2004 R. D. Extra Brut that was just disgorged in February and combines freshness with maturity but will improve over the years. The 2014 La Côte aux Enfants, a 12% alcohol Pinot Noir from Aÿ, is a filigreed red Coteaux Champenois and is fabulous in its lightness, purity and elegance. However, it is still young and peppery and needs some years to gain more complexity.

The wine's name stands for recently disgorged and this vintage Champagne was taken off its lees in 2018. That gave many years for it to develop its depth of flavor, richness and beautifully memorable toasty flavors. Drink through 2028. Roger Voss

Bollinger's 2004 R.D., tasted from magnum, is all class. Silky and understated, the R.D is super-expressive and inviting today. In 2004, the R.D. is decidedly light on its feet and more perfumed than tends to be the norm at Bollinger. Candied lemon peel, mint, apricot, pastry and yellow fruits are all laced together in a Champagne that delivers the goods. The 2004 is 66% Pinot Noir and 34% Chardonnay picked between September 25 and October 8. Disgorged: November 21, 2017

About the grape

Chardonnay - Pinot Noir

Chardonnay - Pinot Noir – verdens fineste mousserende vine

Chardonnay - Pinot Noir blandes almindeligvis for at producere mousserende vine over hele verden.
