Château Léoville Poyferré 2ème Cru Classé 2009 is an exclusive red wine from Saint-Julien in Bordeaux, France, combining power, depth, and elegance in a refined and classic expression. The 2009 vintage is known for its generous style, and the wine presents with great concentration, ripe fruit, and a silky-smooth structure, making it an obvious choice for those seeking a great Bordeaux with both character and finesse.

On the nose, the wine opens with intense nuances of blackcurrant, dark cherries, and plum, beautifully complemented by cedar, tobacco, graphite, spices, and a subtle hint of dark chocolate. The aromatic profile is deep, complex, and very inviting, with a fine balance between ripe fruit and classic Saint-Julien character. The palate is full-bodied, concentrated, and well-structured with ripe tannins, a lovely freshness, and a long, harmonious finish where dark fruit, spice, and elegant minerality clearly emerge. The result is a wine with both intensity, balance, and great aging potential.

Château Léoville Poyferré 2009 pairs particularly well with beef, lamb, game, braised dishes, and mature cheeses. It is a wine for special dinners and for those seeking a stylish and characterful Bordeaux with depth, complexity, and classic French elegance.

Points, passion and precision

98 /100
Having retreated into its shell, the deep garnet colored 2009 Léoville Poyferré gives up slowly revealing notions of cigar boxes, pencil lead, charcoal, rose hip tea and fragrant earth with a core of preserved plums, crème de cassis, espresso and Indian spices. Full, rich, seductive and voluptuously fruited in the mouth, the palate features firm yet beautifully velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long and spicy.

Intense and concentrated, these were the years when Poyferré was turning up the exuberance, and this is intense but clearly great quality. You’ll find crème de cassis, star anise, incense, cigar box, cassis and blackberry. Unusually for 2009, this is not yet ready and needs another four or five years to fully soften and open, but has got so much life ahead of it. Harvest September 29 to 12 October. 80% new oak.

An immensely structured wine, packed with dark tannins promising aging potential. It is complex, powerful, layered with new wood and concentration, finishing with dark plum fruits and acidity.

Dark ruby garnet colour, purple reflections, delicate brightening on the rim. Candied orange zest, ripe dark berries, hints of blackberries and cassis, light precious wood savouriness, fine nougat. Powerful, full-bodied, ripe cherries, vivid, ripe tannins, chocolaty and persistent, mineral touch and savoury nuances on the finish, chocolaty in the aftertaste, approaching its drinking window, one or two years of patience would still be good, a complex food wine.

About the grape

Serving
